Mark 1:1-8, Advent B2
Theme: Peace
Recently a company called SpaceX placed a sign on one of its facilities. It said, “Gateway to Mars.” The sign announces an ambitious project of constructing an avenue of human travel to the planet Mars.
The endeavor promises an opportunity to save humanity by providing an alternate opportunity for human survival in case a species ending event would occur on Earth.
Perhaps such an endeavor might provide an opportunity for the survival of humanity. The cause has its merits, but does it save humanity from itself?
Almost 2,000 years ago, a man named John, known as the Baptist, announced a different gateway. He proclaimed the gateway to Peace. He announced the coming of the Messiah. A special individual who was both human and Divine. An individual who would provide the gateway to a completely revolutionary opportunity for humanity.
Today we know this to have been provided by the Son of Man – Jesus the Christ.
So, what is this “Peace?” Is it a release from oppression? Is it a promise of no more war? Is it a promise of untold wealth? What is it?
Come worship with us at First Christian Church in Warrensburg, Missouri where we will discover a way to save humanity without traveling to another planet – even though a trip to Mars might be fun.
